    A study by psychologists Kristin and Timothy Jay found that the ability to generate swear words is not an indicator of overall language poverty. In fact, they discovered that fluency in swear words is correlated with having a richer vocabulary and being more articulate in general.

    Swearing has been shown to produce a cathartic effect, which can lead to a temporary sense of relief or release. This emotional response is likely due to the activation of the amygdala, which is involved in emotion and arousal. Research by Dr. Richard Stephens has demonstrated that swearing can increase pain tolerance

  • We are kinda multilingual

    Unlike other language production, which involves the left hemisphere's language centers (Broca's area and Wernicke's area), swearing is associated with the limbic system. This is why people with language disorders typically caused by left hemisphere injury, might still be able to swear fluently even when other language abilities are compromised.
